MLT SUPPORTS NUKUNU LANGUAGE AT RISDON PARK PRIMARY SCHOOL

November 21, 2023

L-R: Renee (AET, Risdon Park PS), Kieran (project linguist, MLT), AJ (ACEO, Risdon Park PS).

This week MLT project linguist, Kieran Smith, headed north to Port Pirie on Nukunu Yarta (Nukunu Country), where he spent some time with Renee and AJ at Risdon Park Primary School.

AJ is the school’s Aboriginal Community Education Officer (ACEO) and Renee is the Aboriginal Education Teacher (AET). It was exciting to hear about their plans for a Nukunu Language program at the school in 2024, supported by the Department for Education through ALPI funding (Aboriginal Languages Programs Initiatives).

Nukunu is presently a heritage language without fluent speakers. However, efforts are underway to revive the language, to which Risdon Park’s program will contribute.

MLT was glad to provide the school with a Nukunu Warrarla (language) vocab poster and some Nukunu dictionaries. We look forward to further supporting AJ, Renee and the Risdon Park school community with their program in the new year!
