  • Ara Irititya Archival Project

The “Ara Irititja Archival Project” (or ‘Stories (ara) from long ago (irititja)’) was established in 1994, and provides Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara communities with access to historical records, cultural information and materials, with over 35,000 records. It includes thousands of photos and hundreds of hours of video footage and audio recordings of members of the communities speaking in language. In 2003 ten mobile workstations (or ‘Niri Niri’, meaning scarab beetle) were delivered to Anangu communities (including a computer, data projector, printer and a power supply) which allow Anangu to view and listen to the records.

In addition a permanent exhibition called “Ara Winki: Life of the Pitjantjatjara lands” is held in several interstate and SA institutions, including the SA Museum, National Library, Anangu Education Services, TAFE, etc. This is an interactive multi media CD and draws from the Ara Iritja archive collection.

The web page for details on Ara Iritja is http://www.iritja.com/

The contact e-mail address for more information is: info@irititja.com

or Project Manager, Ara Irititja, PO Box 1234, Marleston, SA 5033.

Although the archive is available to non-Anangu researchers for a fee, the archive was set up and specifically designed as a resource for Anangu people themselves.
